Indemnity: Military widows find law allows benefits curtailed or cut off: (EL PASO TIMES)

The law allows the government to significantly cut -- and in many cases eliminate -- a Defense Department insurance payment if the surviving spouse chooses to receive a Veterans Affairs benefit. The VA benefit was established to compensate for the service-related death of a family member. Vallejo-Moore said she was actually in a better position than many. As the widow of an officer, she received some of the insurance money. Had her husband held a lower rank, she likely would have received no insurance compensation. click here to view
