My husband was a healthy 81 year old man before last January 29th. He sailed his boat in Europe every summer for three months, skippered it himself, crossed the Atlantic Ocean two years ago with his friends on an other boat. He skied, rode his bicycle up the mountains in Malibu, CA where we live, five times a week and was in perfect mental shape also. He fell off of his bicycle at the foot of our driveway, slipped on the wet pavement and skidded, catapulting off of his bike, onto his head. He was airlifted out of our canyon and into the emergency room at UCLA. He spent three weeks in ICU in an induced coma and two more weeks in the hospital, then onto a skilled nursing facility where he was weaned off of his tracheotomy and his g-tube and is now home with full time nursing care. He is not able to walk yet but we're working on it and he is coming alone cognitively with the help of a loving family and hyperbaric therapy. I am his wife, 27 years younger than him. We have a daughter 18, back east at college. This has been a devastating experience for us all but a learning one too. My husband, Billy, is very positive, never complains and is showing me his tremendous character. I just wanted to reach out to help, to get help, to connect. Thank you for providing this.
